Reporter App App Reviews

Good interface, shallow design

First I have to say that I really like the design of this apps. The design is gorgeous, and the interface is well thought out. The one bug I encountered was in trying to export my data, I did not have an email account linked to my device and the app simply did nothing(no error message, etc). I would like to see more done with the data though, because in its current state I would not use it often. If the stats from reports were related to each other, I would find this app useful. As it stands now, I do not need an application to keep track of "What are you doing?" each day and things like that.

Nice app to have

Those who dont write diary everyday like me would find this app quite useful. The user interface is very well thought out to provide great user experience. However, I have several complaints about the design of the app. First, I want some more customization. I wish to be able to decide which questions to be asked more easily. Why not ask me all the questions on the list and let me skip the ones I dont want? Second, I thought it would be nice if the app supported its own alert sound. Other than those Im satisfied with the app :)

Room for improvement

A great app in theory but I believe it can get quite tedious. The reason for this is the inability to edit your reports time and location, so if you missed a couple of days you wouldnt be able to add those reports back in, which may mess with the data. The other problem is visualizing the data. My data only opens up as an excel file but it would be great if it display it in a more unique fashion.

No notification blackout times

If youre on-call and need to leave your phone on all night, this app is not for you. There is no way to block out times not to be notified, so you either get notification from the app 24/7 or none at all.

Easy to use, but strangely useless.

I enjoy how easy to use this app is and it demonstrates great potential. At this point though it doesnt have any clear actionable direction. It just records and then displays. The charts and graphs themselves are nice to look at but they dont say what they are or how they might relate to one another. This app would become exponentially more useful if two things were added. 1. Questions could be scheduled for specific times. (Asking "what did you eat for lunch?" Directly after lunch) 2. The entries were displayed by time of day so you could make observations about what happens and when.

Great potential. Weak app

Very limited functionality. For example it doesnt do much in terms of geo-tracking. Will forget questions if app is removed and installed again. Not a good app in its current form.

Spend too much time with no reward

Seemed so promising at first, but eventually realized I could do nothing with the data. App was crashing a lot and just seemed like a waste of time. 5 months of tracking down the drain.

Great OCD app for us that like to track stuff

I have been using the app for about a month. Find it interesting and with potential. Id like to be able to edit some of the categories after the fact to consolidate events that are the same but I classified them differently over time. Also the color schemes make for difficult to read displays. Would like more options for this to be more readable.

Confusing

Still have no clue how the alert frequency is figured out and / or when it decides to randomly ping me. Sometimes itll do 3 in an hour, sometimes 3 hours between alerts.

Life journaling done right

Reporter is the best solution for Quantified Self life journaling Ive tried, in fact its probably one of the cleanest and best-looking apps Ive seen. Reporter defines a random-sampling journaling workflow that is both flexible and well-thought out. It may not be perfect for everyones needs but it certainly is consistent and easy to use. Personally, I find the report schedule a little constraining. Its great for making sure you track data regularly, but not for adding intermittent single data points rather than a full report. Im guessing that might be the reason why values from the previous report is kept as defaults when you manually submit a new one. UI flaws: Cant edit tokens, cant move tokens between questions, cant change times on reports or create post-dated posts (would be useful to create posts for past events, reporting while being social seems rude.) Things Id hope to see: Quantity tracking (a la Daytum), single data point entry, an online support forum, option to link to RescueTime and other (stable) automatic tracking tools.

UI needs work

Love the idea and ability to customize, but never really felt I understood the apps UI. Adding signifiers and feedback would help.

Really great. Just what I wanted.

After seeing a Feltron report years ago I wanted just such an app, with different question types and the ability to tokenize responses. This is a beautiful execution of that idea. No bugs for me so far. Probably the main feature I would like to see is the ability to edit time tags to be able to create reports in the past - this would be especially useful to me because I dont always have access to my phone. Love that data is all kept on the device. Export worked well for me. Visualizations are a bit constrained and leave something to be desired but hey - make your own with the data :) Felton doesnt use the app to make his!

Needs iOS 8 update.

Great life-logging app, but it could be so much better with app extensions. Being able to send data to a journaling app, for example, would be extremely useful. Display is not optimized for the newer iPhones.

Rigid despite customization options

I dont use Reporter to check in on me at random times of the day. Just want to be able to write a report with a variety of questions each night at bedtime about the day. The ability to program custom questions is fantastic. The fact that I have to tell the app that Ive gone to bed and woken up each time I go to write a fresh report is annoying and results in 2 reports each day, one of which is empty. Further, cleaning up data is a pain. If I spell something wrong, like a friends name, the app memorizes it and Im forever stuck with bad data and suggestions. If I am in SF one day but want to go back and write a report for yesterday when I was in NYC and I write-in NYC, it permanently believes that SF is called NYC. And while you can export data, you cant take it out, clean it up, and reimport it. Also, its buggy. For something designed to give so much control, it is missing some basics.

Great customization and slick UI

This app is really well done. The user interface is beautiful and I have yet to encounter a single bug or hangup. The app allows you to customize when you report and what questions youre asked. It then builds an awesome in app report on the results and you can export the data if you desire to further customize your reporting. Only potential disadvantage you should be aware of is that it doesnt allow you to report in the past, you can only create current reports that will be documented with your current location and current time. Keep up the great work Feltron!

Buggy

The last few updates have jumbled up answers and made things just a mess in general.

Finally Stable

1.1 fixes all the stability issues. Its really good! Been using Reporter for almost a solid year now. Thanks for the update!

Great with one flaw

The app is fantastic once you are in it. My chief complaint is that when launching I have to wait for the splash screen and the opening animation. Please watch the older wwdc talk about app launch performance. Shoot for 500 ms please so I can get in and record as fast as possible.

Promising, but unfinished

Really great idea, and great UI by one of the best information designers out there, but Reporter only goes halfway. It collects lots of data with so much potential, but then doesnt give you any options for drawing insights from it. Raw data is all you get, no correlations, no ability to measure against other factors.

Great

I think its a great app, and I love the ability to add my own questions. I think some users dont get what this app is really about. Its not a health app, its for lifelogging; to see and measure the things youve done over a set period of time, like a year. My complaint is that I cant go back and edit my answers to questions (tokens) in case I make a dumb spelling error or I wasnt more clear in my answer. I also wish it had a built-in tool for displaying all of your data into one big data visualization, basically my own Feltron Report. Aside from those two things I think the app is fantastic. Its beautiful in both design and function.
